Courtesy and Constructive Criticism: A Lesson in Growth

Courtesy and Constructive Criticism: A Lesson in Growth

From Trevor Lewis at Lewis Karate Schools, Barrie

"Every human being is entitled to courtesy and consideration. Constructive criticism is not only to be expected but sought."

– Margaret Chase Smith

At Lewis Karate Schools in Barrie, we understand that learning and growth require both effort and a willingness to listen. Whether it’s improving a kick, mastering a kata, or learning the values that martial arts instills, constructive criticism is a vital part of the process.

Unfortunately, it’s natural for many of us to feel defensive or upset when someone corrects us. But in reality, most people offering corrections—especially your instructors—aren’t trying to make you feel bad. Instead, they’re helping you see how to improve and succeed. This approach is what we call constructive criticism.

Why Is Constructive Criticism Important in Karate?

When an instructor at Lewis Karate Schools adjusts your stance or corrects your technique, it’s not about pointing out what you did wrong. It’s about showing you the right way to do it so you can be your best. In martial arts, as in life, being open to guidance helps us grow stronger, more skilled, and more confident.

Developing Courtesy in Martial Arts

Courtesy is one of the fundamental principles of karate. Being considerate and respectful toward others is just as important as throwing a strong punch or kick. Here’s how we incorporate courtesy and constructive feedback into our karate training:

  1. Listening to Learn: Paying attention to instructors and peers helps us grow and improve, both on and off the mats.
  2. Showing Gratitude: When someone offers feedback, thank them for helping you improve. It’s a sign of respect and appreciation.
  3. Embracing the Lesson: Instead of feeling discouraged by a correction, focus on the opportunity to get better.

Questions for Our Karate Kids

We love asking our students these questions to help them reflect on the values of courtesy and growth:

  1. What does it mean to be considerate in class and with your friends?
  2. Do you feel like you’re always showing courtesy to others?
  3. How do you react when someone corrects you—do you get upset, or do you see it as a chance to learn?

Karate in Barrie: Building Strong, Confident Kids

At Lewis Karate Schools, our mission is to teach more than just punches and kicks. We focus on building character, discipline, and respect. Courtesy and the ability to accept constructive criticism are life skills that will serve our students well beyond the dojo.

Karate is not just about perfecting techniques; it’s about becoming a better version of yourself. By staying open to guidance and showing consideration to others, our students in Barrie are learning to be confident, respectful leaders both in and out of class.

If you’re ready to give your child the opportunity to grow in skill, confidence, and character, we invite you to join us at Lewis Karate Schools in Barrie. Let’s work together to build strong, resilient kids who embody the true spirit of martial arts.

Sincerely,

Trevor Lewis
